What's Happening

During March and April of this year, Dean and I got to go on the trip of a lifetime, with A Better World Canada, a international development agency out of Lacombe, Alberta.

We spent nearly two weeks in Kenya, at an orphanage near Nakuru and then down in the Maasi Mara in southern Kenya.  We were with a group of eighteen other people, including fifteen amazing young people from the Rosedale Valley String Orchestra and the Central Alberta Homeschool Choir.

These young people have been raising money for development projects all over Kenya and it was now their opportunity to see what their concerts had made possible.  The students worked with the choir members of the East Africa Mission Orphanage, singing, teaching music and pouring out love and friendship to these children.

Then, they were able to learn first hand, about the Maasi culture and to participate in a cultural exchange with the people of a Maasi village and school.  It was a huge learning experience for all of us.  Eric Rajah, our host and the founder of A Better World, gave us a tremendous experience and a real education into the realities of international development.

After the group went home, Dean and I and two other adventurers, Katelyn and Colden Pallo, went on to Tanzania.  In Mwanza, on the south shore of Lake Victoria, we met Patrick and Beatrice Mwafute, who run an orphanage for street boys.

We were able to meet the boys as well, and they did an amazing presentation of music and drama recounting the story of the Christian Children's Centre, which is now their home.  This was very special, since our last two years of fundraising through the See Amid the Winter's Snow concerts have been for this orphanage.  What a wonderful place of Christian love and caring.  We had an amazing few days with them and were showered with love and blessings from our experience.  We continue to work toward providing better accomodation for the boys and to more adequately support this very worthy project.  Patrick and Beatrice are so convinced of the power of God to transform the lives of people and we have seen this, first hand, in the lives of these thirty-four boys.  Dean and I are excited to continue doing what we can, through the concerts, to enable the orphanage to continue and perhaps, to grow so that more boys can experience this transforming love of Christ, through Patrick and Beatrice. A huge thank you to those of you who have supported this orphanage through your participation in the See Amid concerts.

Although not actively booking these days, we continue to enjoy bringing our concerts to those who are interested in what we do.

My song 'Polish Me' has won first place in the Christian/Gospel category of the 11th Annual - Great American Song Contest!! Click on the logo below for more information.

The See Amid the Winter Snow Concerts were a crazy but fun-filled time. It was the coldest weather but we had warm hearts and were so blessed to raise around thirteen thousand dollars for the Mwanza orphanage in Tanzania.  Daniel's pictures and presentation were very compelling and prints are still available.  Please pray for Daniel's finger.  An injury last September still prevents him from playing violin.  We all miss that very much.

It is the season of awards show nominations and although Not Like In the Movies did not get any nominations in the music category, it did get nominated in the design category.  Congratulations to my husband, Dean, who took all the photographs and to Claudia Pompei who truly is a great visual artist.  I loved what they did and obviously other people did as well.  Personally, I think it sounds as great as it looks.  If you are interested in having your own copy and seeing the alluring photo of your truly asleep in bed on the front cover, I would be delighted to send you one.  You can order them right here on the website.

I am hoping to do a few more concerts this year.  E mail me if your community is interested.  Also, I did a house concert near Strathmore in July, with a wonderful host, Dorothy Bodeau.  It was one of the highlights of my summer. House concerts are simpler to organize and a great way to bring friends together for a relaxing evening of food and visiting.  Check out the link to Concerts in Your Home for lots of ideas.
